Update…

Yeah, it’s been a while…

I have lots of reasons I won’t bore you with, but they run along the lines of lazy, loss of motivation, a road block and fun stuff like that!

However, I actually learned a lot about myself during this time…So, not necessarily in order, here is what I have been up to.

I finished this little one…

Pattern by Homespun Elegance

Bits & Pieces, “Summer Fun”

I changed a few of the colors, slightly.

I also opted to stick the sheep’s body in x’s.

The pattern calls for a satin stitch, but I had some silk thread I wanted to experiment with.

I have a fabulous start on this one…..

“Northwind”

Pattern by Silver Creek Samplers

I definitely did some color changes. I am also using a “brighter” fabric than the pattern calls for.

Look at that face! I just LOVE it! The pattern calls for filling the cloud in. I am not sure if I will or not. Waiting until I have the entire piece on there to decide :-)

I have these kitted up and ready to start!

And this. This is my lesson. Someone told someone, who told someone that I quilted…and that I had done some custom quilts….

Long story short, the gal wanted a quilt made from her first born’s clothing…

It is certainly not the quilt’s fault, nor the lady who wanted the quilt.

It is square on my shoulders.

The quilt actually came out really well. When you consider I had never done anything like this before, LOL.

However, I did not like making it. This is definitely NOT the kind of quilting I prefer…SO, hopefully the next time someone asks I will remember this and give them a friend’s number, LOL.

I think the bottom line is actually pretty simple…I quilt and stitch because I enjoy creating something for my self or a loved one. I do not enjoy doing what I have been told to do. Story of my life? LOL

There, now that I am a little caught up (LOL) I hope I will be motivated to get back with my SAL and FOF updates. I am considering just call Friday my update day :-)

Ever made a custom quilt?

So, a few weeks ago (like March 8thish) my husband went to the dentist to have some major cleaning done. He came telling me about the conversation he had with the hygienist…
We will call him J and her T…

T: So what does your wife do?
J: She makes quilts. (notice no mention of cooking, cleaning, laundry…LOL)
T: Oh, wow, I just bought a queen size handmade quilt. It should arrive any day. It is a (Not going to use the name, sorry)
J: Oh, was it expensive?
T: Kind of, it was $$$. I wish I had known I would have asked your wife to make me one.

Hubby comes home and repeats story. He remembered the price, but not the maker’s name I got that info later, from T.).

Fast forward to March 29thish. Hubby has to go back for second half of his procedure. (This is where you better laugh. Seriously!)

I am minding my own business when I get a text from J…OK, now I am at home. J is at dentist. T is working on his teeth.

My phone buzzes, I read my message which says,

“T got her quilt and there is something wrong with it. I told her you could fix it.”

(See, you are laughing, right? I was. OK, not really, at this point, but I was before it was over.)

I responded that maybe he better call me to talk about this because it kinda depended (A LOT!) on what was wrong with the quilt.

I was then told it had rooster fabric and it wasn’t supposed to so could I just remove and replace it? (Uh, sure…NOT!!) I am pretty sure he had visions of me just snipping out the offensive pieces and slapping new stuff in there. Hmm.

I reiterated that a phone call was most definitely in order. Pronto. Oh, and to quit promising things I probably couldn’t deliver!

So, bottom line, at the end of the day I chat with T. I let her know that I really had NO way of knowing IF I could help her without seeing the quilt.

So, on the 30th of March she brought the quilt to show me. I will simply list some of the problems.

She ordered one pattern, in specific colors and fabrics, in a queen.
She got a king with the wrong colors and fabrics.
Oh, and there was a little “signature” tag on it that said “MADE IN CHINA”

How do you tactfully tell someone that the nightmare was made in China and not handmade? Oh, and do you even bother to point out that the secondary fabric pattern (that “coordinates” with the roosters) is fish? Maybe it wouldn’t be prudent to also notice/mention that two of the seams were already pulling apart? Perhaps you leave out the part where two different colors were used on the quilting…and it wasn’t supposed to be that way? I can go on….but I won’t.

I did not take pictures of the quilt.

By the end of the night I was going to make a (handmade in California, LOL) quilt for her. A queen size quilt. We settled on some fabrics from my stash. We were (yes, were) going to use a very basic square in a square pattern. I think they were going to end up 20 inches each (that was many changes ago…)

I somehow knew (or felt) like she was not going to love what she had chosen so I did not cut into anything…..

We spoke on the phone and it was determined that she wanted to do something “different”. She had been looking online…Gathering ideas…So we agreed to meet at a fabric store and come up with fabrics and a design.

Hours (that included being shown on her phone the MANY elements she liked in various quilts, looking through books and magazines…) we had a plan.

This plan was log cabin blocks surrounding a “panel” (that I would create from flying geese) of trees, with a scrappy 2 inch border around the log cabins and a 14 inch drop of more flying geese trees (guess I better learn how to make them geese, LOL!)

Here is the panel that I created (it will have more “hill” lines when I quilt it):

Here are some random pictures of possible layouts for the log cabins:

Here is what we settled on:

Sorry these pictures are SO crazy bad, but this was the “idea” for the 14 inch drop. Add neutral colors between the trees and call it a “drop” (ok, probably not as funny as *I* think it is…LOL)

I would be thrilled to show you the actual tree drop, but, um, T changed her mind (see above picture with MORE log cabins…). Yes, really, she changed her mind. Only the corner trees stay (and the center “panel”, of course)…

So, there is a new plan for the drop. We have backing (a tonal flannel). We have binding (one of the browns). We have a plan. I am (sort of) racing to finish this. Not because I have a deadline (I don’t) but because I don’t want T to change her mind again…LOL…running out of fabric for mind changing!

For the record, it is likely she will want window dressings (for 3 windows) and a wall hanging and pillows to coordinate, so the trees will probably get used anyway and I learned how to make flying geese trees!

In spite of changing colors, layouts and patterns midway, I have to say I am actually really loving this quilt. I definitely would not have come up with the design or colors as something for me, but it is looking great! This quilt is going in to a ski/mountain themed guest room.

As of today I am applying the binding! Again, not “my” colors or theme, but I really like this and I learned a lot along the way, LOL.

When it is washed and dried I will share finish photos and the complete stats :-) FYI, yes, I did a lot of paper piecing…I love paper piecing, and it is a good thing!

Back to binding I go…..

A Dinosaur Tale…Part 1

Many moons ago (OK, I don’t remember when, but a long time ago…) my daughter and I went to a quilt show and she saw some dinosaur fabric. She mentioned that she would love to have a dinosaur quilt. She has always loved dinosaurs so this was not a complete surprise. That “I will never see this fabric again moment” hit and I bought what they had. Later the same day we ran into a place selling batik fat quarters that would play well with already purchased fabric. Bought a bunch (like 20ish?). So now I had some fabrics. Time for a plan (yes, I do know it would have been easier to have a plan and then search out fabrics, but apparently I am incapable of rolling like that…)

Every few weeks she would mention a Dino quilt or I would run into the fabric and be reminded. Reminded that I had NO clue what to do with it. Not a single idea. I even took the fabrics on field trips to (multiple) places that sell fabric. Nothing matched. Nothing worked. looked at patterns. I searched out quilts. I looked for quilts done with this focus fabric. I was a little frustrated. To say the least. Inspiration was not happening.

Then one day I saw a dresden quilt online that used a fussy cut at the center. To be honest the one I saw did not have dinosaurs in the center and I do not remember what it did have. This was also before Pinterest, so I have no clue who to give credit to. But, the light bulb went on, the proverbial click into place happened. I was going to use the dinosaurs in the middle of dresdens. The dresdens would be made from the batiks. AWESOME. I had a plan. A major part of the (AHEM) plan include the step where I brush aside the little doubting voice and tell it, “I have a million yards of fabric, I will find a background, backing and binding in my stash, it can’t be that hard.”

So out of the sealed (forever owned) package came the Dresden ruler (SEE, I knew I would need it…someday). I made Dresdens to my hearts content. I fussy cut little dinosaurs into circles.

Suddenly I had 16 large Dresden with cute little circles of dinosaurs in the center. Ahhh. Success. So I turned to me stash to find the perfect background for them. It was going to be amazing. The girl would rave about my creativity. She would be amazed that I hadn’t given up on/forgotten (take your pick) her dinosaur quilt. Let the background auditioning begin…hmmm, nothing worked. Nothing felt right. Nothing clicked.

WHAT? More field trips? really? Yes, so me and my pretty little bag of Dino Dresden’s went shopping. Again. And again.

Stay tuned…There IS more to the story…

A quilt for Brit…

Alrighty…so my daughter is continuing to gently remind me that when one “has” a blog it is somewhat expected that one posts content to that blog…yeah, ok, we can try it THAT way, I guess…

This quilt was gifted last night and I think she liked it! It was made for a young lady who loves the Eiffel Tower, has shown an interest in having some pink and black in her dorm room this year and is at her school partially on a choir scholarship! I am not sure how well all of this will be reflected in the pictures, but I used a tonal hot pink, an Eiffel Tower print and a black on black with a treble clef print. The back and binding are all the black on black print.

My daughter created this pillow to match the quilt. I think she did a fabulous job!

I also made this into a bit of an experimental quilt, trying out a few tips from other blogs I follow (or in some cases, just wandered by?)…

Skook’s Playground linked to a tutorial recently that basically uses fusible products to replace pinning when piecing the top. Worked beautifully for me!

When preparing a binding another gal (sorry. I seriously can’t remember where I saw this) prepares her binding by cutting strips, folding them in half, ironing them and then (this part was new to me) stitching it closed before attaching it to the quilt. It was easy to do, but I honestly didn’t see a benefit to the added step.

Another thing I saw somewhere (going to have to work on keeping track of these things…) was someone who stitches around the entire sandwich before quilting. She said it helped prevent stretching and slipping of the fabric. I would agree!

Ok, seriously, for someone who doesn’t really blog, um, well, LOL, this got kind of long…

Enjoy!

>The VERY First Time…

> WOW! This was the very, very, very first quilt I COMPLETED! I say it like that because there is a baby quilt out there that was CLOSE to being completed when I realized I really wanted to be able to say I OWNED the first quilt I completed…so I got to work on (and finished) this one before actual completion of the baby quilt. I “get” that his is a little twisted, but so am I. :-)

Basically it is a small lap sized wall hanging…LOL…The pattern called for it to be a kid sized lap quilt, and it was done in pinks and greens. I can’t remember what magazine it was from, and I am too lazy to go try to find it. However, the funny part is that when I saw it I instantly thought of how simple and easy it would be! LOL, I have been quilting longer now and think this was quite ambitious for a first time project! Thank you Jackie, for seeing me through this one. You have infinite patience, I now know…LOL

>A Labor of Love

>

This quilt was SO much fun. It was made for my daughter. It was a group effort. My Sister In Law is an awesome, amazing, talented quilter. For years she lived near (ish) me and gently suggested I might like quilting. I resisted (What is the point when you are incapable of sewing a straight line?). Approximately one month after she moved half way across the country I decided I wanted to learn to quilt (Yeah, I know all about great timing!). At any rate, she had a friend who quilted and was going to be moving close to me. So, long story short, her friend (and now mine!) taught me and my daughter how to quilt (something I will always be grateful to both of them for).

Along comes April, and I decide a fantastic gift for my book loving daughter would be a “bookshelf” quilt. Then I had a brilliant (yes, I am taking credit…LOL) idea that it would be awesome for Kim (my daughter) to receive a quilt made by her mother, her quilt teacher (Jackie) and her Aunt (Suzanne)….OK, only slight logistical problems involved here (remember the move half way across the country?)

Regardless of our geographical issues we did it (ON TIME!). We super personalized this. I went and took pictures of the hundreds of books my girly could not consider parting with, so each block represents something she really owns and loves. Many of the books have titles embroidered on them, the fabrics were all chosen specifically for what they represent. It was a lot of fun, and she loves it (PHEW! I am so glad!)

>MY Football Quilt…

>

The front…

A closer look…

The back (fleece!)…

I made this one for ME (AND I kept it!) !
It is simple, but I really enjoy the warmth when
I am sitting at high school football games!

I made this one in August of 2008.
I say “this one” mainly because there were several “football quilts” to follow it
…which I didn’t know at the time!

>A Gifted Quilt…

>OK, This is not really a gifted quilt. It was a quilt which I gifted to a friend! It is one of my versions of a “Brick” quilt. It was fun, quick and I beleive it is well loved in it’s new home. This was also one of my first attempts at doing everything from start to finish…all on my own. For the record I made and gave this in August 2008.
